Toddler Teeth Brushing - Teeth Care for 2-Year-Old Baby

Studies show that children who start brushing their teeth before the age of two has less cavities than those who start brushing their teeth after the age of two. In fact, newborn babies need oral care. Use a cotton ball or soft cloth to wipe gums twice a day. And once a child’s incisors appear, wipe with a washcloth.

Regular Dental Checkup

Oral care begins once a child starts to feed. It is vital and some dentists recommend regular dental checkups from the age of one to ensure proper care of teeth and gums.

Avoid Baby Sleeping During Feeding

Some parents let their baby sleep while feeding but the milk left in baby's mouth for a long time will saturate teeth. Acid is produced and will attack the teeth and increase the chance of cavities.

Quit Using a Feeding Bottle

Once baby reaches 18 months, they should not feed from the bottle and should switch to using a cup to drink milk or other beverages. This limits the time for the milk or flavored beverage to remain inside a child’s mouth.

Rinse with Water after Eating

Dentists advise parents to rinse mouth with water after eating to reduce the sugar or acid inside mouth. For babies under one year of age, parents can use a soft gauze or towel with clean, warm water to gently wipe around baby’s gums and teeth.

No Need to Use Fluoride Toothpaste at This Stage

Children under the age of two should not use fluoride toothpaste until they know how to spit it out. Select a kid’s toothpaste containing fluoride to help prevent tooth decay. Parents should remind their children to brush their teeth in a correct and effective way during different developing stages.
